Beyond MonopolyJan 22, 2010
By art 87 i would say this game is like a very advanced version of Monopoly with a bit of Carcassone.
the big box with the basic game & 5 extensions/expansions is a great value. Amazon pricing of all of this separately is about $150. its nice to have these in one big box instead of 6 boxes. each extension has 4 modules (elements).
the 5 extensions are: 1. Viziers Favor, 2. City Gates, 3. Thief's Turn, 4. Calif's Treasures, 5. Power of the Sultan.
now for the game play. think of Monopoly. there are deeds & money. here u have building tiles & money cards. the object is to get money to buy building cards (6 color groups, Monopoly has 8). points are awarded for having a majority of a color group, twice during the game & at the end.
the tiles are laid out as u acquire them in Carcassone fashion, bearing in mind walls the tile. bonus points are given to the player with the longest wall.
IMO, the first 2 extensions add the most to the basic game, keeping mostly the same rules; 3 has 2 good modules & 2 that are not as essential, IMO; while 4 & 5 are more specious in the way they play.
in Ext 1, the Vizier chip lets u buy a deed/tile out of turn, currency exchange card, bonus cards like "chance" cards that add extra points, & Workers Huts, which are extra "deeds" as if Monopoly's Boardwalk & Park Pl. had a extra blue deed that could be added.
Ext 2 has City gates which breakdown walls, Diamonds card are like wild money cards, the Characters act like "chance" cards, the Camps are tiles that increase "deed"/tile values.
Ext. 3 has City Wall cards which let u add extra walls, the Thief cards let u grab money out of turn & the Street Traders (looks like the Meeples from Carcassone) give u bonus points & "Change" coins give u change. i like the City Walls & Thiefs for regular play & the Traders only as an extension. the Change coins is a personal preference option like in Monopoly where lets say $1 to the $10 bills became optional.
Ext. 4 for me has only one essential module for basic play, the Bazaar tiles which add points. the other 3 modules seem to add or subtract points, which i havent tried yet.
Ext. 5 for me is now over my head, but i like the Random scoring card which would be if in Monopoly, the color group values could be randomized ie. Boardwalk randomly gets the value of Baltic & so on.
i left out some rule details but i just wanted to give an overview of the box.
i love this game & i think it has a high replay value.

One of the best board game out there.Oct 18, 2009
By D. Bouchard One of the best board game out there, contrary to others, I still "liked" the Alhambra, vanilla (or basic) box, but I wanted more, after viewing a awesome review on Youtube, I bought this "Alhambra: Big Box", and even if I already had high expectations, it went above and beyond them. Unlimited game play, and with all 20 modules, probably around hundreds of thousands of different versions of this game. The new tiles are much better then in the vanilla box on it's own.
Actually a good deal for two players, as most of the new extensions boost the two players game experience, and would actually slow down to a crawl the 6 player game. Most of the new expansions are more enjoyable from two to four players.
Awesome deal.

Great Buy and Awesome GameJan 14, 2011
By JRF We got this Big Box Alhambra game and love it! With all the different combinations of play possible, it never gets old. Even our 5 year old plays with us (with help). The only problem will be that the currency cards will wear out faster than the other cards from the expansions, and I don't know if it is possible to buy just the currency cards as replacement parts later. But that's not the game's fault. Oh, and one other thing. I used to live in Granada, Spain, where the real Alhambra is, and I used to visit it quite often. Although you will hear many, many people pronounce it wrong, the correct pronunciation is Ah-LAHM-Brah (that is, with all the A's sounding like "ah" at the Doctor's office -- but the H is totally and completely SILENT!!!!).

fun game for two or moreMay 19, 2010
By Paul A. Spangler I was looking for a game for two and this one was among the best recommended. I'm happy I picked it up. It took a few times to get the precise rules but it is an enjoyable challenge and we are looking forward to trying out the expansions. They could have made the box smaller but I get the "big box" appeal, lots in there.
Great ValueJan 13, 2012
By brauticat Alhambra is a fun and easy to learn game for up to 6 people. This package is a good value as it includes all FIVE expansions each of which contains FOUR new components to the game all of which are optional and not dependent on any of the other components (only dependent on the base game). So, yes, you get the original game (great in and of itself) but 20 different additions to the game which can be mixed and matched in any combination. It's hard (maybe impossible) to find that much playability and variety in a single game that has such broad appeal. I would recommend to anyone to skip the base game and go straight to this package.
