 Defective but funMar 31, 2009

We have had a lot of fun with this train. Tender was defective out of the box. We filled out the Bachmann on-line form and received a functioning replacement 3 months later out of the blue. Annoyingly, the customer service rep we called (after receiving the replacement) stated that we had to pay to ship the defective tender back or else we would be billed - we felt this was poor customer service since the unit has a limited lifetime warranty and was defective out of the box.

I own a number of the "famous and expensive" G scale trains, but this is the first Bachmann G scale I have purchased. For the price, I wansn't expecting much and was pleasantly suprised! The detail is superb on both the locomotive, tender, and boxcar, and good on the caboose. I don't rate the caboose as high as the rest because the cupola on the roof is a somewhat "plastic" looking translucent red, but it isn't enough to be distracting and overall it is beautiful! The grade and thickness of plastic and metal parts are not as durable as the more expensive G scale, but at a fraction of the price, the trade-off is worth it. With care, these trains can last for years.
The track also is not as durable as the solid brass more expensive G scale track. The rail is formed of bent metal and is hollow but certainly seems sturdy enough. One weakness is the joining mechanism which is a pain and very easy to put together incorrectly leaving small bumps at the joint. Pay attention to the directions and assemble the track carefully. I probably will not use this track for outdoors, but it might work OK.
The power pack is standard fare and works reasonably well. I liked that extra parts are included with LGB style couplers allowing the cars to be converted to work with LGB. Personally, I like the look and operation of the knuckle couplers that are standard on Bachmann.
I have not yet tested the smoke, but expect it work as any standard smoke unit on a model train. The "chuff" sound in the tender works very well and adds a nice touch to operation.
Overall I am very pleased and plan to add many more Bachmann Big Hauler sets and cars to my large scale railroad because I will be able to have a beautiful operating garden railroad for the kids without mortgaging my house!
Also, if you search for Bachmann Big Hauler online there are many websites that give advice on how to improve operation and maintain your trains. I highly recommend this product!

I have no complaints about the train, it worked awesome and is definitely top notch. Bachmann makes great products and I will be buying them for years to come. In fact this review would be getting 5 stars if it wasn't for the faulty advertising for the amount of track. Amazon you really need to fix this because it does not correctly reflect what you are selling. This train set does not come with 8'2" x 4'3" of track as described under the products features, it comes with 5'4" x 4' 3" of track in the set box as designed by Bachmann. I know its not a HUGE issue but its still an issue and it's false advertising, be aware buyers.

After searching through the web for a decently priced electric train set, I was very surprised that Amazon had the train set that I was looking for...and moreover for a bargain! The train set arrived much earlier than anticipated and was properly pack. I was shocked to see the huge box... But after opening it, I realized it was meant to protect the train. The Bachmann 4-6-0 locomotive has been described as the "poor man's choice" when it comes to Bachmann electric trains BUT it's a great choice as an introductory choice for those like me getting into the train model hobby. It is beautifully detailed, sturdy, and despite the criticism I found prior to purchasing it, mine runs perfectly and never had any problems with it. I run it indoors and drives the cat crazy! The only word of caution is that you will be addicted to the hobby and end up buying more tracks, parts and accessories.... Like I have now. Amazon is great.... As usual, surprised as always with the service, speed and the COST!

I have collected this G Guage line for years. This one is a classic that will be used to introduce my twin grandsons to railroad adventures. Quality is excellent; fun to see in action.
