Our seven year old daughter is getting the hang of this game, the scoring takes a little time to get used to, but it makes for a fun 2-4 player game. The rules are simpler and the game-play is less competitive than for the Original Carcassonne - (Big Box Set), (for example - there is no stealing of cities or land). The concept is easily learnt and a fun addition to a games night, but plays quite differently from the original games.
My only gripe is that I still can't work out how the tiles are meant to fit in the box during play - am I missing something?

My daughter received this game for Christmas about 3 years ago when she was 11. We had never heard of it, but my sister-in-law had done some research and found it to be highly recommended.
We liked to play games together after dinner and we were very excited to have something new. It instantly became a favorite of ours and we began playing it on a regular basis. It's great because it incorporates both luck and skill and isn't too mentally taxing. There are some games that, by the end of the day, just require to much concentration and mental effort. This was a perfect combination of the two. In addition, one person doesn't consistantly win. Some games -- once you develop a strategy -- end up with the same person winning all the time which isn't very much fun for the other player.
This week she has been home from school with a nasty bug and when she started feeling better this afternoon, she asked for me to play this with her. I realized what a compliment it is to the game that after 3 years of owning it (and she is now a 14-year-old) she likes to play it just as much as she did when she first received it. The great thing is, I like it too !

I've played all of the current Carcassonne expansions, but Carcassonne: The Discovery is the least competitive of all of them. This game is much more family friendly because of it. The shapes and colors are easy to recognize and play with. The only problem I've had with this game is storage. The pictures on the tiles are glued on, so make sure to store in a dry place otherwise they'll peel off.

I'm a big fan of all Carcassonne games. This one is no exception. I played it with my parents (not gamers) and had a blast.
Carcassonne: The Discovery is a tile laying game with little wooden followers. During your turn, you draw a random tile, place it where it is legal to do so and generates you the biggest advantage, and either place or remove a wooden follower. The first part of that is the same as many other carcassonne games: tiles are squares with mountain, grass, and water on the edges, and tiles can only be placed next to tiles with the same type of edge. The second part (placing followers) is the same as other Carcassonne games: you place your follower on one type of terrain on the tile (different terrains have different scoring rules). The last part is what differs significantly from the other carcassonne games. In The Discovery, followers stay on completed features until removed (and the points for a feature may go up after completion, so there is strategy in determining when best to score).
One complaint about the original Carcassonne is that there is little player interaction: often called "multiplayer solitaire," without, for example, the Inns and Cathedrals, Tower, or Princess and Dragon expansions, which all increase player interaction. This isn't as much of a problem (if you view it as such) with The Discovery. The scoring rules for the discovery are not entirely local. This causes players to be more likely to place tiles near where other players are playing.
