Big game in a small box.Aug 24, 2011
By P. Mumford What a great euro-game this is. It has quickly become a favorite. Don't let the small box fool you, this is a big game (which plays in an hour). Its well put together and there is a lot going on. The tile draft is the best part, but I also love the tile placement, scoring, and multiple small VP engines. Each of the above listed aspects is innovative in some small way, and the game feels fresh. It has a simple closed free market economy that is robust enough that the game doesn't break even if there is an unexpected surfeit or shortage of a commodity.
Strategically, the key is to compete in at least one, or better yet two, of the three scoring categories (hats, barrels, real estate), and ALSO have at least one brown-tile VP engine going. But it is very possible to win by specializing.
It is thematic in the euro tradition. I think its lovely. You can make some scotch! There are location tiles for such places as Loch Lomond, the famous Loch Ness, Duart Castle, Iona Abbey, etc. Its far more thematic than Goa, which might be Glen More's closest comparison. It main thematic fault is that in the game you need wheat to make scotch. Wrong: scotch is made from barley!!
Glen More scales well from two to five players. Three and four are the best counts. The dummy player, for 2 and 3 handed games, is very simply integrated into the game-it actually makes the game better rather than worse.
The rulebook could have been larger-the type is small. In fact the whole game could have been printed a wee bit larger. I normally hate over boxed, over produced games, but this gem deserves a little more cardboard.
