Lost Cities Game Review by Charis Games

Title: Lost Cities

Designer: Reiner Knizia

Publisher: Kosmos and Rio Grande Games (1999)

Game Time: 20-30 Minutes

Ages: 10+

Designed by Reiner Knizia, Lost Cities is a highly addictive 30 minute card game for two. It has been called “One of the BEST two-player games ever.” This is due to the fact that the game mechanic
employs a good bit of decision-making and suspense in the game play.

The theme of Lost Cities centers around creating and completing expeditions for lost treasures. The tension of the game is found in the interaction between the two players and the risk/reward factor of
beginning new expeditions.

Lost Cities has a Rummy-type feel to the game and includes a suspense factor that keeps you engaged throughout the game play. Each turn involves playing and drawing a card (the Rummy theme). Beginning a new expedition costs you 20 points. If the game ends before you complete the expedition, then you may find yourself scoring negative points.

You can play investment cards which multiply you rewards (or losses). During the game, you will find yourself examining the cards in your hand, the cards (expeditions) on the table, and weighing the odds of what cards you can expect to draw and see your opponent play.

Lost Cities is a great couples game and fits the niche for a quick card game that can be played after dinner.

Great game for two players! Love the fact that after 3 hands game is over and you can start again for another round. Always different every hand!

4Only Game My Wife Loves to PlayMay 27, 2010
Well my wife will not play any games other then card games and she loves this one. I think it might be that she wins at it more then loses. Hard decisions are to be made from start to finish and is very stressful to me :) The game does have a little to high of a luck factor for my taste but if you play best out of three it balances out fairly well.

5Favorite 2-person gameMay 17, 2010
My partner and I play this game at least once a week. It only takes about 30 minutes, but it's so relaxing and fun. The art on the cards is gorgeous, and it's easy to imagine that you are going on these fantastic journeys. Easy to learn.

5Very fun and easy card gameMay 10, 2010
I was looking for a few simple games that we could play at home and this one is great. It is very easy to play, and all my kids, ages 6-11 understand the rules. The nice thing is that games can be played very quickly - in about 20 minutes for 3 rounds. The game involves a nice blend of skill and luck - higly recommended.

5Simple rules; intriguing game!Apr 18, 2010
The best games are those with just a few simple rules, but with a large number of decision-based variations. This game fills the bill marvelously.
