Fun tactical / strategic economic gameJan 23, 2010

I've played this game only twice, but have enjoyed both plays enough that I want to play it more. It it a very elegant game, with smooth flowing game play. Whereas, I don't feel fully immersed in the merchant theme, I really enjoy the way the different mechanics work in the game. There is a nice balance built into the cards; if it is beneficial in one area, it is restricting in another. The amount of variables built right into the cards is very cool and it makes decision making difficult much of the time. Though it's a set collecting game, it's approaches the mechanic in a way I haven't seen before. It's not too difficult to learn for non-"gamers", but I feel would be very satisfying to board game geeks. I got it new for very cheap, but after playing it, I would say it's worth the full price!

Suprisingly funJul 13, 2010
By dpjohn0628 I purchased this product at a local gaming shop thinking that it focused more on the sailing aspect and thought I was going to be dissapointed. I was wrong!!! At first glance this game may look and even seem simple but because of the game mechanics it involves a lot of stategy. The basic idea is to gains "Ducats" by trading and acumualting wares. The more wares in a single stack the more points. After that this game is anything but basic. First each card has 2 of 4 possible "actions". Only 3 of these actions are benificial to the player the other is negative. When you play a stack you have to count these and the effects "double" with each symbol. The trading part of play allows you to trade cards with the "pirates action" (the one that is negative). The way you lay your goods in the stack determines both the maximum number of cards you can have at the start of the next turn and the number of cards you "must" play on your next turn. It also has harbor bonuses that add a lot to the game. This is also a very easy game to learn.

I think more can be done with this.Feb 07, 2011
By Jerry Nieland I assumed it would be more than a simple matching card game.
the board is almost not needed. I think I would enjoy a trading board game (instead of a card game) that had more to do with trading than matching. That said I will not rate this low because it was not what I expected, but I will give it just 3 stars because to me it was just ok.

Good interactive card management and trading gameDec 10, 2010

My wife and I played this at a convention last year and when my Brother in Law had a birthday coming we thought this would be a good gift so we could play it...
This is a pretty fun game where you need to manage the number of cards in your hand and trade for cards with other players you need to make sets that score at the end of the game. The board is nice and has some "card" ships that move around to pick up special tokens that enhance your turn. I really think this game could have easily been a card only game.
Without a doubt it is a fun game and is currently on our "high-rotation" list for game nights along with TPOC, Age of Empires III, and Glory to Rome.
