2 player games are only OK, but with more, it's fun.Feb 14, 2010
By E. Rubin I bought this game because my boyfriend and I were interested in playing more games together. This game does have a 2 player option, which is great, but there's just not much too this game in a 2 player setting. It's fun, easy to learn, and a quick play. Once you've played once, it shouldn't take more than 30 min to complete it.
If you're buying it for the 2 player feature, I'd look elsewhere (Agricola is great for 2 players), but if you're looking for a quick game for more people, this would be allright.

Superb - a beautiful gameSep 18, 2011
By Eo This is a bidding game, where you create sets of tiles and score points for those sets of tiles. Groups of tiles come up for bid, and you compete for them. The game is brilliantly designed, it has a number of mechanisms working and they all seem to fit together perfectly. Because there are many ways to score, the different sets of tiles are not worth the same to each player. The bidding rounds themselves can either be triggered by "Ra" tiles which come up randomly, or you can also force a bidding round -- giving you the advantage of being able to bid last (bidding is conducted openly, so the last bidder knows all the previous bids), but forcing you to buy the set up for grabs if nobody else does. If a set is not bid on, then typically another tile gets added to it, usually increasing the value of the set further, but sometimes making the set worse. The bidding is great on many levels -- for example, you have may have no interest in set, but if you know for certain that someone else will want it, you might want to force a bidding round, preventing the set from getting even more tiles before it is auctioned off.
There are disaster tiles which come up sometimes, as with the other tiles some of these may be very bad for one player and not hurt another player very much or at all. There is a tension of trying to estimate when the current "epoch" of bidding will end -- important because you'd like to use all your four suns (coins) in each round (the winning bid pays the 1 coin they bid) but if you use them up too early, the other players could pick up tons of tiles on the cheap as you are frozen out of the round once you run out of suns (coins). When you bid, your are also bidding for the sun (coin) that will replace the one you just spent, the replacement sun to be used in the next round -- a very neat mechanism. The suns all have different values so ties in bidding are impossible.
Scoring also occurs on various levels, some short-term, some long-term. It basically a game of trying to calculate what you need, what is the best way to get it with the limited resources you have, and how to prevent the other players from getting what they want at the moment, or later, by having them use their coins now and run out of money later. The best player in the long run will be the one who can judge the odds better, and see how the tiles would help (or sometimes hurt) the different players. Probably one of best medium-light eurogames in existence, rules are more complex than American games but after 2 or 3 plays you will have them down cold. Games are pretty quick, about 30 minutes. I have played the game with 2 and 3 players, it's great for both of these, though 3 is slightly better. 5 is the maximum number of players.

"grandma"
RA is a fun game for many ages. My 12 year old grandson, his parents, 17 year old niese, and I played it and had a great time. It can be played in about 1/2 hr. once you learn the rules and strategy. I have a feeling my 5 year old granddaughter (who loves games such as Zooloretto) would also enjoy it with a little help. If you are a gaming family, this is entertainment that takes some strategy and planning and fun!
A great auction game!Dec 01, 2011
By Jonathan L. Schindler Ra is an excellent auction game, and every game is different because of what's valuable to individual players. Each turn produces an interesting decision, and bidding is a give-and-take between the players. This is an excellent board game for any collection and is among the most fun that I own.
