5One of the best games I've ever playedJul 15, 2010
I love Carcassonne, and almost everybody I introduce to it loves it too. It is a very clever game, that gives players lots of chances to make interesting decisions, but the mechanics of the game are very simple and the rules are easy to learn. It's just so much fun trying to decide where to put your tile and where to place your followers. Also, it consistently plays in about 45 minutes or less, so you don't have to worry about dragging friends into a long game that they will get bored of. The travel edition is excellent, because it is easy to take anywhere and plays just as well as the original. Another wonderful thing about this game is that it appeals to a wide audience--not just strategy gamers--but strategy lovers will find plenty of strategic possibilities to whet their appetites. Enjoy!

5I love this editionOct 26, 2009
I want to start off by saying that I own both the Carcassonne Big Box and the travel edition. I love them both, but the one I end up playing the most is actually the travel version. It's great because the cloth bag folds up so small; I can toss it in my bag, and it's there for an impromptu game whenever we like. My boyfriend and I frequently take this edition to friends' houses, coffee shops and the like. The tiles are not that much smaller than the original version, but the difference is just enough that you can comfortably play this at a cafe table whereas the big version takes up too much space. We love this edition!

Some reviewers have complained that this edition is not worth adding to your collection because it is not truly a "travel" game--it still requires a flat surface to play, and because the tiles are smaller, you can't play this with any of the expansions. In my experience, these are not problems because the unexpanded game is still a ton of fun, and unless you're in the car, there is usually a table or floor nearby where you can play.

The Bottom Line:
Carcassonne Travel Edition is one of the most used and well-loved games in my collection; I highly recommend this for any fan of Carcassonne who is frequently on the go.

4It is a mini edition rather than a travel editionJun 10, 2008
As other(s) have noted, the travel edition does not add many benefits. In fact, it's more of a "mini" version than a true travel version. It just makes it easy to carry, but because the travel case is a soft cloth bag I fear that the pieces will become damaged in transit and that the cloth bag will get dirty easily. In fact, I plan to build myself a hard travel case for it.

That being said, the pouch and other materials are made in very good quality and none of the gameplay is sacrificed to make it a travel edition. Unfortunately, the tiles are just big enough as to prohibit playing during an airplane ride. (You simply won't have enough space on the seat tray to lay out all the tiles) You need about 2 square feet of space to play all the tiles, plus another 1 square foot to place the scoring board.

However it is a great game.

Little known details:

The travel edition is (C) 2007, so it follows the "3rd edition" rules.
The contents are: hard cardboard tiles, wooden meeples, cloth bag (which doubles as scoring board), color instructions printed on a single sheet of paper.

1Buy the original instead.Jan 06, 2008
There are only two differences between this version and the original Carcassonne game.

1) It comes with a cloth scoreboard/bag. You cannot use the bag for pulling tiles out of while using it as a scoreboard, thus the dual purpose is kind of ruined... it's only useful for storing game pieces when not in use.

2) The pieces are merely slightly smaller. Not even a 2/3rds difference from the original set. This means you won't save a lot of extra space when travelling compared to the original. This also means you can never add any of the optional expansion sets to it, since the sizes are different.

Our normal play set consists of the original game, Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders, King & Scout, River 1 & 2, die Cartherer, and the mini-expansion from Games Quarterly magazine #11. All of these pieces from all of the sets fit into the original box with the original insert (without hiding pieces underneath.) The trick is to carefully lay the meeples flat in a ziplock sandwich baggie on top of the scoreboard. We take Carcassonne on all our trips with us and rarely lack room in our luggage for this one box of game items, although it could be collapsed further into a smaller package by placing all the game items in a smaller box/bag and using a smaller homemade scoreboard.

I see absolutely no advantage or allure to owning this travel edition when the original is just as portable.
